damn it!

This makes me a very sad girl.

John Edwards’ 2008 campaign is the first presidential campaign I’ve ever worked on, so it’s hitting me much harder than I realized it might. I really do believe that he’s the best person for the job. so to know that he’s not going to get the chance (at least, not this time) is very upsetting.

I don’t have a second choice, because I REALLY do not trust either Clinton or Obama. I would love to see either a woman or an African-American in the White House, but not these two. So I’m not sure how I’m going to vote on February 5th. I may still vote for Edwards, just because I believe in him so much and I’m so opposed to the current front runners. Or, just to be pissy, I may vote for Mike Gravel. He hasn’t dropped out yet, he’s on the primary ballot and I actually like a lot of what he has to say.

Still won’t be the same, though.

I’ll miss ya, John, I really will.

new website gig…

Thanks to MusicianMan, I got myself a new website gig: US Tour of Duty. I didn’t design it, but starting last week I migrated the hosting over to a new company, updated the information and bullshitted (bullshat?) my way through altering a couple of graphics. Not bad, considering I am in no way a graphic artist. And it looks like I’ll be the main maintenance person. Whee! Even better? I’m getting paid. Double whee! It’s not much – since it’s a grassroots operation, I don’t like to charge a lot, especially when I believe in the work. But it’s enough for a little extra money, which is always helpful, and definitely more than I’m getting paid for the other sites I maintain on a volunteer basis.

So that make three websites of which I am the maintenance person: SoCal Grassroots, LA4Edwards and US Tour of Duty. All very worthy organizations, if I do say so myself.

oh yeah, bill baby…

Ya know, I’m just loving Bill Maher. Seriously, the more I see of him, the more I’m loving what he’s all about. The man’s got brains, balls and a wit sharp enough to skewer a roasted pig (which he might not do, as he’s a prominent member of PETA). He’s definitely making his way into my imaginary male seraglio (though Jon Stewart is still my imaginary boyfriend – sorry Bill). I may not always agree with him, but he makes a hell of a lot of sense, which wins mega points in my book.

What’s got me joining in on the Maher love? His Dickheads of the Year article.

Ooh, yeah, Bill, give Mama what she likes…

my oh my…

….this looks like a week for Schadenfreude Pie.

Not only has yet another anti-gay Republican legislator been caught with his hand in the “soliciting gay sex in a public restroom” cookie jar and dear ol’ Al Gonzales resigned as US Attorney General, but last week even Republican creationists on the Texas State School Board voted against including intelligent design in science classes.

Schadenfreude Pie – dark, rich and delicious…

busyness ensues…

So, yeah, there’s this thing going on, ya know? About folks wanting to be President of the United States and spending lots of money to let you know how they’d be a way better President of the United States than any of the other folks wanting to be President of the United States, not to say astronomically better than the current resident of the White House and his henchmen.

(Then again, any of my cats could be better at that job than Bush. I mean, whichever one got the job could just clean himself or throw up a hairball on national television and his approval rating would go through the roof. Then again, my cats do clean themselves and hork up hairballs in a very dignified manner. It’s a thrill to behold, really.)

I’ve already said who I’m supporting, but now I’m putting my volunteer hours where my mouth is: I’m helping out on the website for Los Angeles for Edwards. The design and initial build is being done by another fellow, but I’ll be helping with the expanded build and the maintenance. It’s what I do best. And I’ll be helping out at a 4th of July Picnic that Los Angeles for Edwards is co-sponsoring. Come on by if you’re in the area, and look for the person in the first half of the event that has “Global Warming” on her back. I’ll be happy to tell you all about John Edwards stands and plans re: Global Warming. And other stuff as they come up.

Of course, this is in addition to my continuing political work as a Tech Chair and Communications Vice-Chair/Secretary and Endorsements Secretary and…

Yeah, the craziness has come back. Yeesh.

fun with photos…

I have a nice little digital camera that ModelGirl gave to me a few years ago. I carry it in my purse, because I never know when I’m going to see something that I think is picture worthy. Like this:

(Good to know, Person-Who-Lives-In-My-Neighborhood. I’ll look you up if I’m ever in need of sadism or masochism.)

Or this:

(All hail the Three-Eyed Simpsons Fish!)

Or even when in San Diego for the recent California Democratic Convention, catching the oh-so-dreamy John Edwards winning delegate hearts all over the damned place:

Disclosure: I was heavily leaning towards Edwards before the convention, because I agreed with his positions and because, while in Washington, DC a couple of years ago, while sitting in John Conyers’ office with MusicianMan, Mimi Kennedy and one of Conyers’ top aides, the aide told us that Edwards was the one to watch, should he decide to run.

On the Sunday of the convention, I made sure I was in the main room for Edwards speech, because I was really interested in what he had to say. I had caught a few minutes of Hillary and Barack the day before and wasn’t all that impressed, although the electricity in the room with Obama was palpable. Somehow I ended up near the stage when Edwards came in the room. He started off on the opposite from me and just walked the aisles, shaking hands with everyone he could, and next thing I knew there he was in front of me. So I stuck my hand out and it got shook. And I tingled. Yea!

So I maneuvered myself and found myself sitting on the floor right at the velvet ropes and heard every word. When I wasn’t taking pictures, that it. His honesty and sincerity connected with the audience. Forget Obama. Forget Clinton. There was no substance to their speeches. There was plenty of substance in Edwards speech and I believed every word, which is amazing, considering I’m one of the most cynical mo-fos you’ll ever meet.

Edwards is the man.

update…

Sorry I’ve been gone two weeks. I’ve been in a whirl of busy!

Re: the delegate elections – no one on my slate was elected. We would have been were it not for our new assemblyman bascially backing the other slate and using his connections to get out voters who are part of a very cohesive ethnic community in my neck of the woods. I don’t fault anyone for that – such are the ways of politics. And as the head of our slate said, this assemblyman has been working for over a decade to enable his community to have a voice that they didn’t have in the past, so I can’t be upset about that.

There were, unfortunately, other forces at work that were a bit more unsavory. Forces that tried to stay hidden, forces that broke with the bylaws of the very groups they purported to represent. Alas, those too are the ways of politics.

Luckily, though the have-to-remain-unnamed forces won in my district (thanks to the assemblyman’s help), in other districts they were handily defeated, including the district where I used to live and where many of my political friends still reside and were elected. Even sweeter, two of the prime movers of those forces were roundly squashed in their own bids for delegate status. The bitter may be bitter, but oh, how the sweet does wonderfully make up for it.

Actually, I’m not too bitter about the results of my district. It happened. And now it’s time to move on. Move on I shall. Because there are other ways of influencing and revitalizing the Democratic Party.

vote for me!

Shameless Plug:

If any of y’all are registered Democrats living in the 43rd Assembly District (which includes Burbank, Glendale, Los Feliz, Silverlake and parts of North Hollywood and Valley Village – see LAVote.net to find your assembly district) and are interested in helping to revitalize the California Democratic Party, please please please email me and let me know. It’s going to be a stiff election, with a number of CDP apparatchiks running to keep out the progressive voice and to maintain the status quo, so we need all the help we can get.

If you’re interested in supporting Progressive politics, but aren’t in the 43rd AD, see Progressive Slate to find out who’s running in your AD and visit the California State Legislature site to discover your assembly district.

Thank you!
